The challenge mode button is the cookie next to the reincarnate button

Challenge Modes are a feature in Cookie Clicker that temporarily impose special conditions on the player in exchange for potential benefits.

The cookie button next to the big "Reincarnate" button on the ascension screen can be used to select a challenge mode. The listed behavior will then be applied to your next run. Ascending again will automatically return the challenge mode to "None".

Challenges

Currently, there is only one challenge, Born Again. However, more may be added in the future.

Icon Name Description
Chocolate chip cookie.png None No special modifiers.
Transcendent cookie.png Born again

This run will behave as if you'd just started the game from scratch.[note 1] Prestige levels and heavenly upgrades will have no effect, as will sugar lumps[note 2] and building levels. Perma-upgrades and minigames will be unavailable.

Some achievements are only available in this mode.

These achievements cannot be earned while benefiting from prestige. This means they only can be unlocked on an initial playthrough, a Born Again run, or by ascending before earning your first prestige level.

Trivia

  • In the source code of version 2.0 of Cookie Clicker, a third challenge mode called "Trigger finger" with the "Shadow mouse" icon has been commented out. Its description reads:

"In this run, scrolling your mouse wheel on the cookie counts as clicking it. Some upgrades introduce new clicking behaviors. No clicking achievements may be obtained in this mode.
Reaching 1 quadrillion cookies in this mode unlocks a special heavenly upgrade."

Notes

  1. Achievements (and thus kitten upgrades) will remain unlocked. There are currently no Born Again-related achievements affected by this loophole, as the last achievement that allowes upgrades to be bought requires 1 million cookies while the first upgrade costs 9 million cookies. The same applies to Golden Cookie upgrades and research upgrades.
  2. While sugar lumps cannot be interacted with manually, they will continue to grow and fall behind the scenes. In particular, golden sugar lumps will grant their full benefit if they automatically drop during Born Again.
