The Grandma is the second building in the game, initially costing 100 cookies and produces 1 CpS by baking them for the player. She is one of the two buildings shown when the game first begins (the other being cursors).
Upon unlocking 7 grandma upgrades whilst having at least 6 grandmas, the Bingo Center/Research Facility is unlocked, which additionally unlocks one new upgrade after 30 minutes starting once the last research item is purchased. Research includes five cookie production multipliers, one upgrade to double grandma efficiency, and three upgrades to greatly increase grandma output and progress the Grandmapocalypse.
Unlike most buildings, Grandmas have numerous additional upgrades that boost production to herself and most other buildings. This means that even with a low base CpS of 1, Grandmas and their boost to buildings can account for more cookies than all buildings later in the game.
Increasing grandma level increases their CpS by 1% per level additively. Higher numbers of grandmas and a higher grandma level will allow more stockbrokers to be hired in the Stock Market mini-game in order to lower the overhead cost.

Since the 1.032 update, grandmas now have varying appearances based off the above type upgrades, as well as two seasonal grandma types for Easter and Christmas. However, there is one exception; the grandma related to the Javascript Console appears after buying the Script grannies synergy upgrade, rather then the Binary grandmas type upgrade.

The Bingo center/Research facility is unlocked once the Elder achievement is earned for owning 7 Grandma types. It begins the research upgrades which are unlocked once every 30 minutes (timer begins upon purchasing the previous research upgrade). Some of these research upgrades allow the player to enter the next stage of the Grandmapocalypse and some boost Grandma production. Krumblor Auras
The Krumblor aura Elder Battalion, unlocked by sacrificing 100 Grandmas, boosts Grandmas by 1% for every non-Grandma building while the aura Reality Bending boosts Grandmas by 0.1% for every non-Grandma building. This can provide a significant boost to CpS if the player has all research upgrades, all Grandma upgrades and a large amount of buildings.

Changes from one stage to another can be obtained by the One Mind, Communal Brainsweep and Elder Pact upgrade. Once the Grandmatriarchs are appeased (by activating the Elder Pledge, Elder Covenant or selling all Grandmas), the background will change back to normal, as well as the store icon changing back to the regular grandma, until the Elder Pledge runs out or if the player revokes the Elder Covenant.
Store Icon Changes
The store icon for grandmas will change from the regular version to different ones, depending on the state of the Grandmapocalypse. Business Day grandmas do not change.

Names
Hovering over a Grandma in the building section will reveal her name and age. In addition to the various generic "grandma-sounding" names that are included by default, Patreon supporters over a certain tier have the privilege to submit a custom name with will appear highlighted in white while hovering. Patreon-submitted names can be turned off from the options menu, only displaying the generic names from the default list.

- The appearance of an Altered Grandma resembles that of an angered Grandmatriarch during the Grandmapocalypse.
- To further support this, the research/bingo center upgrade would be available at around the time the player buys the Altered Grandma.
- In addition, the upgrade "Elder Pact" gives each grandma additional CPS with each portal, which is also associated with the Altered Grandma.
